Unlike most other gemstones that are crystalline in nature, opals are made of tiny spheres of silica and water. The properties that make opals prized for their beauty also make them susceptible to absorbing liquids, which can affect their vibrancy and color.
Avoid showering or swimming in your opals, and keep them away from hair products, soaps, and perfumes. If exposed to unwanted solutions, rinse immediately with water, wipe with a soft cloth and allow them to dry naturally. Do not try to speed up the process, such as heating them with a hair dryer, as the heat can make them turn yellow or brown.

14K GOLD FILLED
The best you can get before paying for solid gold, layers of 14k gold are pressure and heat bonded, not plated, to a core of quality jeweler's brass. Gold filled metal won't chip, flake, or turn your skin green.
STERLING SILVER
An alloy of pure silver and copper added for strength, sterling silver is guaranteed to be 92.5% silver. It will tarnish over time, which a polishing cloth can restore to its original shine.

Prolonged exposure to chemicals, especially chlorine, can eventually damage precious metals. I recommend removing any type of jewelry before using a pool or hot tub, especially on a regular basis.
Storing jewelry in a ziplock bag will keep sterling from tarnishing as quickly.
Cleaning is simple - use a tiny bit of liquid Dawn or ivory soap with warm water and a toothbrush to clean as needed.
